The etymology of the word Himalaya

Linguists say that the name of the mountain Himalaya comes from the Sanskrit Himalaya (हिमालाय 'house of snow'), from himá (हिम 'snow') and ā-laya (आलाय 'house, dwelling'). They say that from it they are now known as the "Himalaya Mountains", usually shortened to "Himalaya".
As is commonly speculated in contemporary etymologies. All high mountains have snow on top.
