According to Beekes, unknown. The variation "υ/η" may indicate a pre-Greek word, although it has no clear parallels.

It is undoubtedly the word "kall" of the Albanian language, and the other possibility parallel to it is the verb "ngul". Both have in common their "put something inside" semantics.
