Gjuha shqipe ka të ngjarë të ketë luajtur një rol të rëndësishëm në formimin e fjalorit dhe gramatikës së saj, dhe këto elemente janë ndarë dhe përshtatur nga gjuhë të tjera.

Fjala latine për "ulem" është "sedes", por në fjalët ultimatun dhe ultimo, lidhja me rrënjën shqipe "ul" zbulon një marrëdhënie më të thellë etimologjike.
